Drink Water

I thought I’d start this blog off with a bit of actionable advice. So here it is:

Drink some water.

That’s it. This is my number one, top ranked, most excellent piece of advice. This is Step Zero – whatever else you were planning, do this first. No, I’m serious.

Listen, it’s not a big ask. It’s as simple as keeping a water bottle or a full glass nearby, and letting nature take its course. You don’t even have to think about it. The body craves water.

I used to work in an office that provided free soft drinks and snacks to the employees. At the time, I thought I’d be wasting their generosity if I didn’t chow down on sodas and crisps and these little bags of cookies. And, no surprise, I often felt listless and unmotivated. When I hit a snag in my work, I’d take the opportunity to avoid the problem, stroll to the kitchen and pop open another sugary drink. Delicious!

This was back before my life fell apart, but even then you could see the trajectory. I was making poor decisions because I hadn’t taken any time to think them through. In a sense, they weren’t decisions at all. I was reacting to my environment instead of acting deliberately. But enough about that, let’s get back on topic.

The standard advice is to drink eight glasses of water a day. Here are some of the benefits from drinking water, according to WebMD:

  • Maintains your body’s fluid balances
  • Helps control calories
  • Energizes muscles
  • Improves skin health
  • Improves kidney health
  • Helps maintain proper bowel movements
  • Avoid dehydration, which can cause fatigue, headaches, dizziness
  • Makes you smarter and also better looking

Sounds good. And here are the drawbacks:

Okay, I’ll admit you might spill some on your pants and look like you wet yourself. That’s pretty embarrassing! But I think the empty list is a more effective visual.

Now, I don’t want to give all you new readers the wrong idea. This blog is meant to be about big issues, philosophy of living, things like that. It won’t be just a series of life hacks.

But you need to drink water.

Put it on your desk, in your bag, wherever is convenient, and then go to town. Go crazy. Get yourself one of those cool twisty straws. Why not! Building a better life should be fun 🙂
